Writing in 1909, Sam Foss in “Some Cardinal Principles of a Librarian’s World” said, “A dollar bill that never circulates is not worth as much as a cent that keeps moving. Nearly every librarian ought to double the circulation of his books…” A lofty goal, but how do you get your faculty and students to use and value the resources and services that you offer? First, we will look at some of the basic principles of successful marketing and specific strategies that have worked in school libraries. Second, we will break into small groups and you will be given the opportunity to discuss concerns, formulate plans for change, and share things that have worked for you. Books that sit on the shelf and databases that are never used are not worth much. What have done to get those feet in the door? We will learn from each other.
